Medicare Levy & MLS Calculator
Australian residents pay 2% Medicare levy on top of income tax (with a low-income reduction phase-in between $27,222 and $34,027). High earners without an appropriate level of private hospital cover pay an additional Medicare Levy Surcharge of 1%, 1.25%, or 1.5% — kicking in at $97k single, $194k family, with the family threshold rising by $1,500 per dependant child after the first. AgoTax applies the right rate based on your salary, family situation, and the "private hospital cover" toggle in Advanced.

Frequently asked
When does the surcharge apply?
When your income for surcharge purposes (taxable income + reportable super) exceeds $97k single or $194k family AND you don't hold an appropriate level of private hospital cover for the full income year.
How much hospital cover do I need to avoid MLS?
An 'appropriate level' policy with an excess no greater than $750 single / $1,500 family. Extras-only or general treatment doesn't count.
What if I had cover for part of the year?
You may owe a pro-rated MLS for the months without cover. AgoTax doesn't yet model partial-year cover; the exact calc requires your tax return.
